Avoid putting weight on the affected side and get plenty of rest. Apply ice as soon after the injury occurs as possible to inhibit swelling, and continue to apply ice at intervals while you recover. When the injury first occurs, use ice for twenty minutes each time up to four times. If you perform a physical role at work, you’ll need to take some time off.
- While you rest, elevate the affected ankle as much as possible.
- You can use an elasticated bandage to support the ankle during your recovery or wear purpose-made support.
- If you can’t avoid moving around when you’ve got a sprained ankle, you can use crutches to support your weight and keep it off the affected joint.
How long does it take to recover from a sprained ankle?
That will depend on the severity of the injury, but many people will be back to normal in approximately ten days. If you experience a particularly bad sprain, however, it can take a few weeks or even a couple of months to heal completely.
